Two Technologies, One Direction: Origin by Ocean x ÄIO

The future of sustainable materials is built through collaboration and we are really excited to share what Origin by Ocean, a company transforming invasive algae into high-value ingredients while actively restoring marine ecosystems, has formulated with ÄIO’s ingredients.
Both of us we face a challenge: how to create high-performance ingredients without putting pressure on nature. Origin by Ocean works with marine biomass, particularly harmful algal blooms, converting them into functional ingredients for industries such as cosmetics. At ÄIO, our goal has always been clear: to create (through proprietary yeast fermentation using low-value side streams) sustainable and high-value fats and oils that can replace conventional ingredients without compromising performance.

Different raw materials. Same principle: valorise what already exists.

Origin by Ocean’s portfolio includes bioactive compounds such as alginates and fucoidans, extracted from Sargassum Natans/Fluitans (an invasive brown algae species) through a highly-optimized patented biorefining process that uses the principles of Green Chemistry
  • OCEANBOOST™LF INCI: FUCOIDAN is a Fucose-Containing Sulfated Polysaccharide (FCSP) also known as Fucoidan
  • OCEANTHIX™LV INCI: ALGIN is a sustainably-sourced, low-viscosity anionic biopolymer
ÄIO products (ingredients) include:
  • RedOil: antioxidant-rich, retinol-like activity without irritation
  • ZymaLipid Complex: high-purity fatty acids for texture and structure
  • Encapsulated oil: multifunctional, nutrient-rich ingredient
Origin by Ocean has developed cosmetic formulations using ÄIO ingredients, bringing together algae-based and fermentation-derived materials into real product concepts. These formulations are marking a clear step forward: from ingredient development to formulation to product experience. We are not only developing raw materials anymore, but we are actively supporting formulation-ready solutions.
They have developed a portfolio of innovative cosmetic formulations showcasing next-generation ingredients in real applications. These include products such as for example Bioluminescent | Serum Highlighter Stick, Coral Glow | Soothing Lip Oil, Daybreak | Eyelluminator, Deep Abyss | Liquid Eyeliner, Ethereal Mist | Shimmering Top Coat, Face Lace | Seafoam Priming Serum, Mother-of-Pearl | Calming Eye Tint, Seabreeze | Lip & Cheek Flush, SeaSea Cream | Complexion Color + Care, and Sunkissed | Bronzing Drops. In these formulations, ÄIO ingredients are combined with other innovative materials from companies such as Lignopure, Kaffe Bueno, Upcycled Beauty Company, Susonity, Evident Ingredients, Croda, and Clariant, demonstrating how diverse sustainable technologies can come together to create high-performance, formulation-ready cosmetic products.
This cooperation is more than a partnership, it is a proof point. Origin by Ocean is actively exploring how different sustainable ingredients can work together in real formulations. By combining algae-based materials with other new and sustainably made ingredients, they are building more complete, functional systems for formulators and brands.
“At Origin by Ocean, we are constantly exploring how different sustainable ingredients can work together in real formulations. While our focus is on algae-based materials, combining them with complementary technologies like fermentation allows us to create more complete, high-performance solutions. Collaborations like this help us test, validate, and demonstrate how next-generation ingredients can move beyond concepts into real products.” Marc Desmarais, Product Developer at Origin by Ocean.
“For us at ÄIO, this collaboration is a clear step forward, from developing ingredients to enabling real formulations. We are truly happy to see this initiative, where multiple new, sustainable ingredients come together in real products. When materials are designed to work together, we can deliver both performance and impact, and that is what the industry needs today.” Magdalena Koziol, Head of Cosmetics Development at ÄIO.

From Lab to Application

At ÄIO, we are no longer only developing raw materials. We are now working with partners to bring ingredients into application-ready formats, supported by
validated performance and formulation data, defined benefits and claims, regulatory groundwork and certifications, and real products ready to be tested and experienced. These formulations mark an important shift and this is where innovation becomes tangible.
The future of cosmetics will be built on connected systems, where different technologies complement each other, ingredients are designed to work together, sustainability and performance go hand in hand. This collaboration between Origin by Ocean and ÄIO is a clear example of this shift.
