ÄIO creates oils
from microbes, not land

As populations and production demand grow, the current model of oil production becomes more and more unstable. Natural resources are being exploited faster than they can be replenished, but there is no practical alternative. ÄIO seeks to change this.

We have the technology. Let’s use it to solve our problems.

The need for change has never been more urgent

70% loss of biodiversity on land
50% loss of biodiversity in fresh waters
44% of all land in use solely for agriculture

Demand continues to rise, but Earth can no longer keep up

We are at a tipping point with overpopulation, overproduction, and exploitation of various natural resources.

According to the WFF (Living Planet Report (2022), our current food production has resulted in 70% loss of biodiversity on land and 50% loss of biodiversity in fresh waters. The global fats and oils market, however, is valued at $350B by 2032. Demand is constantly rising, but the supply chain is becoming more and more threatened by changes in the climate, geopolitics, and population growth.

From hectares to bioreactors

Fermentation requires no large-scale land use
By-products are a source material with no supply chain volatility
No ethical dilemmas: we can produce oils at a global scale even without sacrifice

41%
less CO2

per kg of product

ÄIO product:
3.98 kg CO2/kg

Vegetable oil:
6.7 kg CO2/kg

95%
less land

per kg of product

ÄIO product:
0.3 m2
agricultural land

Vegetable oil:
5.62 m2
agricultural land

94%
less water

per kg of product

ÄIO product:
0.09 m3 water-eq

Vegetable oil:
5 m3 water-eq

And it only gets better at scale

Our data shows that as we move from pilot (0.3 m³) to demo (10 m³) to commercial scale (>100 m³), both land use and climate impact drop dramatically approaching levels comparable to vegetable oil, but with a fraction of the environmental footprint.

Industrial growth is not a zero-sum game

ÄIO’s science is driven and shaped by key values that benefit both the needs of global production pipelines and the continued abundance of our natural resources.

  • Production is independent of weather conditions
  • Can be produced year-round
  • Helps ensure food security
  • Traceability (origin can be tracked)
  • Circular economy and valorization of by-products
