ÄIO > Technology
Turning underutilized resources into high-value ingredients, powered by fermentation and digital biotechnology
Our vision extends beyond replacing palm oil or coconut oil. We are building a new category of fermentation-derived lipids designed for a future where performance, sustainability, supply security, and traceability are equally important. By combining proprietary biotechnology, industrial scalability, and circular feedstocks, ÄIO is creating the next generation of oils and fats for a resource-constrained world.
ÄIO’s production pipeline
1 One technology. Multiple markets.
How residue becomes the product
Working with oils is both
science and art.
Our platform combines strain development, fermentation science,
downstream processing, and digital biotechnology to create tailored
lipid ingredients for diverse industries.
The same core technology can generate ingredients for:
– food and nutrition
– personal care and cosmetics
– oleochemicals and household products
This platform approach allows ÄIO to continuously
develop new products while leveraging the same
scalable manufacturing infrastructure.
2 Raw materials
Raw material: Molasses and 1st generation sugars
Molasses and 1st generation sugars are used as a microbiological energy source in a wide range of fermentation processes.
These are stable and predictable substrate to store and handle, easy to incorporate into fermentation processes, and cost-effective.
Raw material: Dairy side-streams
Dairy side-streams are a rich by-products of the dairy industry that are rich in lactose, proteins, and minerals.
For example global whey production exceeds 200 million tons annually. Using it as a base for fermentation processes can reduce the disposal burden on producers.
Raw material: 2nd generation sugars
2nd generation sugars, for example wood-based residues and co-streams generated by the paper, pulp and wood industries, such as sawdust, are promising source materials for both environmental and economic reasons.
2nd generation sugars do not compete with other food sources in terms of land resources or water and are both traceable and cost-effective.
3 Fermentation
The hero of our process: Bioreactor
Stainless-steel stirred tank bioreactor is the heart of fermentation. Purpose-built for microbial cultures, allows for a variety of cultivation strategies with precise control over feed flow rate, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and agitation.
This level of process control and data acquisition is essential for growing lipid-rich yeast biomass at scale and for obtaining information that translate lab-scale performance into industrially relevant volumes.
Thrice the product from a single process
Output:
Encapsulated oil
The filtered ferment passes through the spray-dryer, which polishes and converts the product into a dry, stable format, known as our Encapsulated oil.
This material is ideal for cosmetics and food applications, where handling, shelf life, and controlled release are essential. It also enables us to experiment with advanced delivery formats.
Output:
ZymaLipid
When Encapsulated oil is extracted, we the result is a crude ZymaLipid substance. Through an additional refining process, becomes the creamy ZymaLipid.
Output:
Fermira™ RedOil
By extracting Encapsulated oil in a particular way, our signature ingredient, Fermira™ RedOil is produced.
